Orphaned at the See also:age of four, he was reared by an See also:uncle at See also:Augsburg, who finally sent him to the university of See also:Dillingen. There he laid the See also:foundation of the modest piety by which his whole See also:life was distinguished. After serving as See also:priest in several Bavarian towns, he made his way in 1799 to See also:Linz in See also:Austria, where he was welcomed by See also:Bishop See also:Gall, and set to See also:work first at Leonding and then at Waldneukirchen, becoming in ,8o6 pastor at Gallneukirchen. His pietistic See also:movement won considerable way among the Catholic laity, and even attracted some fifty or sixty priests. The See also:death of Gall and other powerful See also:friends, however, exposed him to See also:bitter enmity and persecution from about 1812, and he had to See also:answer endless accusations in the consistorial courts. His enemies followed him when he returned to Bavaria, but in 1817 the Prussian See also:government appointed him to a professorship at See also:Dusseldorf, and in 1819 gave him the pastorate at Sayn near Neuwied.
