ARAUCO , a See also:

coast See also:province of See also:southern See also:Chile, bounded N., E. and S. by the provinces of See also:Concepcion, Bio-bio, See also:Malleco and See also:Cautin. See also:Area, 2458 sq. m.; pop. (est. 1902) 70,635. The province originally covered the once See also:independent See also:Indian territory of See also:Araucania (q.v.), but this was afterwards divided into four provinces. It is devoted largely to agricultural pursuits. The See also:capital Lebt (pop. in 1902, 3178) is situated on the coast about 55 m. See also:south of Concepcion, with which it is connected by See also:rail.
