In 18o2 Alexander I. summoned him back to See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office and appointed him imperial chancellor. This was the See also:period of the See also:triumph of the Vorontsovs, who had always insisted on the See also:necessity of a See also:close See also:union with See also:Austria and See also:Great See also:Britain, in opposition to See also:Panin and his followers, who had leaned on See also:France or See also:Prussia till the outbreak of the Revolution made friendship with France impossible. Vorontsov was also an implacable opponent of See also:Napoleon, whose " topsy-turvyness " he was never weary of denouncing. The rupture with Napoleon in 1803 is mainly attributable to him. He also took a leading See also:part in the See also:internal See also:administration and was in favour of a thorough reform of the See also:senate and the ministries. He retired in 1804. He possessed an extraordinary memory and a See also:firm and wide grasp of See also:history.
