ancient name for a See also:hill in central See also:France, now Alise-Ste-Reine (See also:department Cote d'Or), where in 52 B.C. See also:Caesar besieged the Gaulish See also:national See also:leader Vercingetorix within enormous entrenchments, forced him to surrender, and thus practically ended his See also:conquest of See also:Gaul. The See also:siege-See also:works have been excavated by See also:Napoleon III. and others, down to the See also:present See also:day. The site seems to have been inhabited also during the See also:Roman See also:empire, but its importance is limited to Caesar's siege.
