ABILDGAARD, NIKOLAJ See also:ABRAHAM (1744—1809) , called " the See also:Father of Danish See also:Painting," was See also:born at See also:Copenhagen, the son of Soren Abildgaard, an antiquarian draughtsman of repute. He formed his See also:style on that of See also:Claude and of See also:Nicolas Poussin; and was a See also:cold theorist, inspired not by nature but by See also:art. As a technical painter he attained remarkable success, his See also:tone being very harmonious and even, but the effect, to a foreigner's See also:eye, is rarely interesting. His See also:works are scarcely known out of Copenhagen, where he won an immense fame in his own See also:generation. He was the founder of the Danish school of painting, and the See also:master of See also:Thorwaldsen and See also:Eckersberg.
